Dominion Hospital - March 12, 2017

National Creative Arts Therapies Week (CATs Week) occurs annually in the United States and Canada, during the month of March. It is designated to celebrate the creative arts therapies, including art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy, psychodrama, poetry therapy, and dance/movement therapy. During this week, creative or expressive arts therapists throughout the country take the opportunity to spread the word about the importance of their work. This year, Creative Arts Therapies Week is March 12-18, 2017. Here at Dominion Hospital we will be offering a variety of experiential sessions for staff to participate in. We are firm believers in the benefits of active learning. What better way to learn about dance, art, and music therapy than to experience it for yourself. Additionally, this firsthand experience will provide you with greater insight into the patient experience - not mention potentially introduce you to a new form of self-care! The expressive therapy department at Dominion Hospital is proud to offer our patients a full spectrum of creative expression. We offer groups on each of the units, 7 days a week. The primary focus of our work is to provide the patient with a safe place to explore and express their thoughts and feelings. By utilizing the creative process we help the patient to connect with themselves and others while encouraging them to consider using the arts as a coping strategy.

“Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.”

“Art opens the closets, airs out the cellars and attics. It brings healing.”
- Julia Cameron

“Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. It speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. It transcends our ordinary lives and lets us imagine what is possible.”
- Richard Kamler
