Creative Arts Therapy Week – March 13-19, 2016
Creative Arts Therapy:
American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) – American Art Therapy Association (AATA) – American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) – North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA)
- Creative Arts Therapists are human service professionals who use arts modalities and creative processes for the purpose of ameliorating disability and illness and optimizing health and wellness.
- Treatment outcomes include: improving communication and expression, and increasing physical, emotional, cognitive and/or social functioning. (http://www.nccata.org)
- Expressive therapies can tap into pre-verbal senses and offer non-traditional outlets to help redirect intense feelings in more productive and creative ways.
- With these new skills, we can feel less alone in the world, less inclined toward anger, depression or self-harming behavior and more able to express feelings that may be hard to share with others.
Expressive Therapy at Dominion Hospital
Dominion Hospital stands out as one of relatively few facilities in the U.S. to offer multiple expressive creative therapies to adults, adolescents and children with mental health disorders and/or the experience of trauma. We lead the Northern Virginia and metropolitan Washington, D.C., region by providing art therapy, dance/movement therapy, music therapy and therapeutic recreation services close to home. The approach is a holistic one that supports integration of the body, mind and emotions.
